Find Toronto Media Jobs Online

By , About.com Guide

Toronto is a busy city for media with numerous film, television, publishing and journalism outlets in the city. If you'd like to find employment in Toronto's media sector, use these online resources to search for Toronto media jobs.

Use these listings to find the web resources that are right for you, then you can bookmark those pages and check them daily (Use Firefox as your web browser? Learn how to quickly open multiple bookmarks on About.com: Web Search).

Toronto Media Job Boards

Media Job Search Canada
Generally updated with several new jobs a day, Media Job Search Canada is a great starting point when you're looking for Toronto media jobs.
• When searching or browsing the job postings you can view them by industry (Advertising/PR, Audio/Music, Film, Graphics/Web, Magazines, Newspapers, Performing Arts, Radio, Television) or by the type of work you'd be doing (Admin/HR, Finance, Internships, I.T., Purchase/Logistics, Sales). Of course all postings are cross-listed under however many categories are relevant.
• You can sign up for the RSS feed for a specific category (which will give you all results from across Canada)
• Job hunters can post a resume. Note that it will only be seen by companies that purchase an employment listing or ad space on the site. Good for privacy, but you won't get as much exposure as some sites offer.
• If you want to research companies (which is always a good idea!), Media Job Search Canada also has a big list of media companies sorted by province.

Jeff Gaulin's Job Board
According to the "About" section of this website, Canadian journalist Jeff Gaulin began this service as an email list for his friends. The site has certainly grown and flourished since then and the tagline "A job for every journalist" isn't far from the truth.
• You can search jobs across nine categories - print, broadcasting, PR/IR/GR, new media, art/production, photographers, sales, administration and teaching - or search for all jobs in Ontario.
• Starting on the home page gives you the additional option of seeing the most recent jobs posted and a selection of featured jobs.
• For an annual fee, you can list yourself as a Journalist-for-Hire in the publicly viewable database.

Toronto Craigslist - Jobs Section
Craigslist is a free site that allows anyone to post a classified ad in any number of categories. This is both good and bad, as it is frequently updated but the only quality control is an unmonitored system of community flagging. Certainly keep an eye on the Craigslist boards, but also carefully scrutinize any opportunity you see or job offer you get as a result of replying to an ad or posting your resume.
• If you're new to Craigslist, start on the Toronto Craigslist home page to familiarize yourself with using the site and the many categories available.
• If you're familiar with the site, go straight to the Toronto Craigslist Jobs page to see the latest additions and to perform a search.
• Or jump straight to the listings for your industry: Art/Media/Design, Marketing/Advertising/PR, TV/Film/Video/Radio, Web/HTML/Info Design, or Writing/Editing.
• If you're just starting out you may be interested in the short-term/low-pay/no-pay Gigs Section of Craigslist
• Finally, you may want to consider posting your resume or posting an ad for your services.

Mandy.com
Mandy is an international resource for film and television professionals that always has numerous listings for Ontario.
• Choose between fully paid or low/no pay, and choose a skill set or search all skills.
• You can also sign up for one month of free email alerts for your preferred search, although after one month there is an annual fee.

Work in Culture
Provided by Cultural Careers Council Ontario, many of the listings on the job board are what would more traditionally be considered arts jobs, but many media listings appear as well (and it's a blurry line between the two as is). Take note, many listings are volunteer, so read carefully before applying.

Magazines Canada
Unfortunately the Magazines Canada job board doesn't tend to have a large number of opportunities posted at any one time, but the site of this not-for-profit professional magazine industry association is also worth a visit just to learn more about working in the magazine industry.

Media Company Job Boards

Many media companies also post available opportunities on their own websites. These listings may or may not be cross-listed to the websites mentioned above. Here are just a few of the many media companies in Toronto which are frequently hiring:
  • Jobs at CBC/Radio Canada, Canada's national public broadcaster.
  • Corus Entertainment, home to Nelvana, Kids Can Press, and various television and radio stations (click "Careers").
  • CTV/GlobeMedia Careers. Powered by Workopolis, these pages have jobs with CTV, The Globe and Mail and CHUM Radio.
  • TVO on Workopolis. Ontario's public educational media organization lists their jobs through this large jobs site.
  • Many people don't realize women's fiction publisher Harlequin is based in Toronto (choose "Careers" from the bottom menu).
  • Inside Toronto, which publishes nine community newspapers and two magazines, has information on submitting your resume for general consideration.

Find Toronto Media Jobs Using General Job Boards

Of course another option is to use multi-industry Toronto job boards and to limit your searches accordingly. Sure, you'll find a lot of the same postings multiple times if you search both kinds of job boards, but better to find a posting about your dream job twice than not at all! On many of these sites you can save searches and resumes, and make your resume searchable by employers.
