How To Register Your Bike With The Toronto Police

By Marilyn Campbell, About.com

Unfortunately bicycle theft is a fact of life in a city like Toronto. Registering your bike with the Toronto Police is a quick, free way to increase your chances of having your bike returned to you if it is ever stolen.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Ten minutes

Here's How:

  1. Find the Serial Number on Your Bicycle
If you can't find a serial number, the Toronto Police suggest creating a unique number and etching it onto the frame.
  2. Note Other Unique Features
Although not mandatory for registration, you should also take note of the make, model, color and any other identifying characteristics of your bike.
  3. Submit the Information
Use the TPS Bicycle Registration form to enter the information. It's quickest to submit the form online, but you can also print the form and mail it in or drop it off if you prefer.
  4. Keep the Information for Yourself
Record the serial number and other information for your own records. If possible, hang onto the store receipt from when you bought your bike as proof of purchase. You may even want to take a few photos if you have a digital camera handy.
  5. Take Measures to Keep Your Bike Safe
Obviously the real goal is not to have your bike stolen at all. The City of Toronto's Combat Bicycle Theft webpage has tips on where and how to lock your bike.
  6. Report Bicycle Theft if it Occurs
If your bike or parts from your bike are stolen, report it right away to the police. Drop in to your local station or call the non-emergency number, 416-808-2222.
