Yonge-Dundas Square

Yonge-Dundas Square in Summer

For 2009 the Toronto International Film Festival has expanded the free programming that was first introduced in 2008. For the full run of the festival Yonge-Dundas Square will be the site of free film screenings, performances and other activities, beginning at noon each day.

Free TIFF Programming for 2009

So what are the free TIFF events at Yonge-Dundas Square? There are several kinds of events taking place:
  • TIFF Live In Concert Film Series - Music documentaries and concert films old and new will be screened, many preceded by shorts from the National Film Board of Canada and other music-themed shorts.

  • TIFF SHHH! Silent Movies - Classic silent films such as 20 000 Leagues Under the Sea and Robin Hood will be screened in the afternoons.

  • TIFF YDS Spotlight - Festival films will be highlighted with special events such as a roller-derby exhibition and swing dance lessons.

  • TIFF Kids Zone - For one day only (Saturday September 12th) the afternoon programming will include face-painting and other activities for kids.
If any of those things sound like a great way to spend your afternoon or evening, check out the full day-by-day listing of events at http://tiff.net/filmsandschedules/programmes/yongedundassquare

The Public Wrap Party

At 9pm on Saturday September 19th Yonge-Dundas Square will also be the place for a public Festival Wrap Party featuring an audiovisual mashup of film clips by Eclectic Method.

How to Get to Yonge-Dundas Square

As expected, Yonge-Dundas Square is on the south east corner of Yonge and Dundas, across from the northern end of the Eaton Centre. If you take the subway to Dundas Station on the Yonge Line you can exit directly into the square. The Dundas Streetcar will also let you off at the corner. Driving is not recommended, but any cab driver in Toronto will know how to get you there.
