Festivals, Fundraisers and Other Special Events

Film festivals, marathons and Halloween fun fill October. This is also the month of Nuit Blanche and Harbourfront's International Festival of Authors, so there's plenty to choose from in Toronto in October 2008.

October 3 - October 6
Toronto International Art Fair
A serious fair for serious collectors, the TIAF has a growing reputation not only as a show and sale but as an event exploring the present and future of the art world. Admission fees apply, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

October 4
Scotiabank Nuit Blanche
This free overnight festival of contemporary art fills the streets with interactive performances. Take an afternoon nap and get ready to spend the night exploring!

October 17 - October 24
Toronto After Dark Film Festival
A celebration of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, action and cult films descend on Toronto just in time for Halloween. This fast-growing young film festival - a true Toronto success story - screens features and shorts from around the world.

October 18-19, October 25-26
Boo at the Zoo
Fun family entertainment will include magic, storytelling and an activity center. Every adult can bring in up to two kids for free (ages 12 and under) - if those kids are in costume that is!

October 18
Oasis ZooRun at the Toronto Zoo
Serious runners and families alike are invited to participate in this fundraiser for the Toronto Zoo Foundation. Choose from the 10k Run, the 5k Fun Run/Walk, or the Cub Run for kids.

October 19
Toronto Zombie Walk
Now tied into the After Dark Film Festival, the Zombie Walk is your chance to warm-up for Halloween by dressing like the undead and walking the sidewalks of Toronto in a brain-hungry horde! The walk begins at Queen's Park and generally ends near an After Dark screening.

October 19
The GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon
For those who feel they have a more lively step than a zombie, the Toronto Marathon runs the same Sunday morning. Both the full and half marathon begin at Mel Lastman Square and end at Queen's Park, while the 5k route centers around the Queen's Park Crescent and the stretch of University reaching down to Wellington. Entertainment will take place along the route and inside Queen's Park.

October 20 - October 25
L'Oreal Fashion Week
The Fashion Design Council of Canada presents 2009 Spring Collections at Nathan Phillips Square. Limited tickets are available to the public beginning in early September.

October 22 - October 26
Planet in Focus Film Festival
Toronto's environmental-themed film festival returns for its 9th successful season. See films and videos of all styles that explore today's ecological issues and celebrate the natural world.

October 22 - November 1
Toronto International Festival of Authors
Rohinton Mistry, Farley Mowat and Paul Quarrington will be among the many authors from around the world who will gather at Harbourfront Centre for readings, discussions and book signings. Part of the International Readings at Harbourfront series, it is the keystone event of this year-round program.
