Mother's Day Outings and Entertainment
Beyond just going out to eat, there are plenty of options for going out to spend the day together. There are galleries, museums, gardens and even sporting events to choose from - something to suit every mom's taste. For mom's who'd like to spend Mother's Day out and about, there are plenty of places and events to choose from in May.
Art & Museums
May is both Museum Month and Asian Heritage Month and many area museums are having special events to celebrate one or both of these events. In 2008 for example, the ROM has a free Sunday concert at 2pm on Mother's Day featuring the Toronto Chinese Orchestra.
"May is Museum Month" Events
The Art Gallery of Ontario is currently closed for renovations, but many independent galleries like those in the Distillery District and Queen West are open on Sundays.

Zoos, Farms and Gardens
The Toronto Zoo is celebrating Mother's Day with 97.3 EZ Rock. The radio station will be offering free admission to the first 97 mothers who arrive, plus their families (up to 4 people). On Mother's Day the Toronto Zoo will open at 9am.
Guide to Visiting the Toronto Zoo
Another option for visiting with animal mothers is Riverdale Farm. Admission is always free at the farm, and the area around it is lovely for walking as well. Note that pets are not allowed inside the farm, so you may not be able to bring the whole family.

The Toronto Botanical Garden has the next event in their Style Series on Mother's Day - a floral demonstration with a champagne and hors d'oeuvres reception. Get tickets in advance for the 1-4pm event for $55. Of course you can also just visit the gardens and walk around for free.

Sporting Events
My family once headed to Woodbine Racetrack to celebrate a birthday and weren't sure what to expect, but we had a fantastic time. On Mother's Day there's live Thoroughbred Racing starting at 1:10pm. Admission to the track itself is free - just be sure to set yourself a betting limit before you go!

Unfortunately the Jays are out of town on May 11th, but you could have a Mother's Day outing earlier in the week and see them take on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on the Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
