Most Canadians know that November 11th is Remembrance Day, but from November 5th to November 11th is actually Veterans' Week here in Canada. Of course on the 11th there are many Remembrance Day Ceremonies which you can attend, but throughout Veterans' Week there are other ways to learn about, remember and honour those who served.

Explore some of the Veterans' Week events and activities you can take part in this November in Toronto:

Support Sunnybrook's "Raise a Flag" Campaign

The Sunnybrook Veterans' Centre offers care to approximately 500 Canadian veterans, making it the largest veterans' care facility in the country. In 2012, the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is once again asking Canadians to take part in Operation Raise a Flag and donate either $20 or $50 to have a small or large Canadian flag added to Sunnybrook's lawn for November 11th. Money raised by this visual tribute will go to support Sunnybrook's Veterans' Programs, which help Sunnybrook provide the best life experience possible to veterans who are staying at the Veterans' Centre.

TPL Remembrance Day Program

On Monday November 5 The Memory Project presents a Remembrance Day Program at the College/Shaw branch of the Toronto Public Library, from 2pm-3pm. "Guest speaker Ms. Alexandra Hackett, veteran of the British Forces, who served from 1963-1966 in the U.K. and Germany, will be discussing the changing role of women in the military."

Remembrance Day Concerts

In 2012 there are two special opportunities to mark Veterans' Week by taking in a concert:

On Friday November 9 at 7:30pm Christ Church Deer Park and Nine Sparrows Arts Foundation are holding a Concert of Remembrance at the church (1570 Yonge, at Heath Street). Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

And on Sunday November 11 at 7pm "Windjammers: In Remembrance, A Tribute to Canada’s Armed Forces" will take place at Brampton's Rose Theatre.

Toronto Zoo Admission Deal for Canadian Forces Members and Veterans

In 2012, the Toronto Zoo is offering FREE admission to current members of the Canadian Forces and 1/2 price admission to veterans and some CF family members October 1 through Remembrance Day.

Share Veterans' Week With Youth

Teachers, youth leaders or parents who are looking for Veterans' Week activities can explore the Youth & Educators section of the Veterans Affairs Canada website to find stories, photos, craft ideas and more.

Learn About Your Local Legion

Did you know that Royal Canadian Legion membership is open to all Canadians? Although the organization began as a veterans group, new membership categories have been added to create membership levels for anyone who wants to support the organization's activities. Along with supporting veterans, the legion is involved in youth programs, support for seniors, and other community service roles, in addition to social activities for members. Learn more about the national organization at Legion.ca and search for a local branch through the website of the Royal Canadian Legion - Ontario Provincial Command.
