The Waterfront Trail is a much larger project, running from Niagara on the Lake, along the Lake Ontario shoreline and the St. Lawrence River to the Quebec border. Some of the trail is a dedicated paved or gravel lane, other parts are designated roads for cyclists and others to use. There are still breaks in the trail and unsigned portions, but a great deal of work has been completed since the first section of the trail officially opened in 1995.
The Martin Goodman Trail actually begins on the west side of Toronto, but cyclists have to use roads to get through central Toronto. Cherry Beach is considered a good stop on the route as it has parking, washrooms and, on a good day, swimming.
