A Toronto Teen Bringing a Better Understanding of Autism

By , About.com GuideMarch 21, 2008

Follow me on:

In February I was fascinated when I saw a CTV News item on Carly, a non-verbal Toronto teen with autism. Recently this thirteen year old began speaking to her family through her computer, typing out thoughts that were previously trapped inside her.

The report went into some detail on what had brought this change about, but on Saturday night the CTV News series W5 will be airing an entire episode about Carly, the sort of therapy she has undergone, and the opportunities -- or lack thereof -- for others to have access to the same sort of support Carly has received.

I know that everyone with autism is unique, and it would be foolish to think that what worked well for her would be helpful to everyone with autism. But with World Autism Awareness Day coming up on April 2nd, and questions of funding for those with autism an ongoing issue in Ontario, I know I'll be tuning into CTV at 7pm to listen to anything Carly does have to say.
