Eat Smart! When You Eat Out

Tuesday January 15, 2008
I've always had a vague knowledge of food service health inspections - which is to say, I walk past those green "PASS" signs posted in restaurant windows without really noticing them, but a yellow "CONDITIONAL PASS" always manages to catch my eye, and possibly change my plans.

What I only recently learned about is Eat Smart! Ontario's Healthy Restaurants program. This is a provincial program that hands out Awards of Excellence based not only on a restaurant's cleanliness record, but also on their commitment to smoke-free-ness and whether or not the menu has enough options that meet healthy eating criteria.

This all sounds great in theory, and I've made note of the restaurants in my area that have earned their Eat Smart! stripes. Unfortunately, just because I'm presented with a healthier dining option, doesn't mean that's what I'll actually order. What about you? How do you fare when it comes to choosing healthy fare? Or is it even something you bother to think about?
