Book Drive for Aboriginal Youth

Monday January 7, 2008
The books you read as a child stay with you well into your adult life - especially if like me, your adult life includes two shelves still filled with many of said books.

The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, used his New Year's Day Levee to kick-off a book drive for Aboriginal youth in Northern Ontario. Folks province-wide are encouraged to bring donations of new books into any OPP detachment before January 18th to stock libraries in the most remote Ontario communities. Here in Toronto it's even easier to make a donation, as new books are also being accepted at Toronto Police Stations.

The book drive wasn't Onley's idea - it was started by Ontario's previous Lieutenant Governor, James Bartleman. But Onley recognizes the importance of the program, as evidenced in his press statement about the book drive, which also provides details on where the books will be distributed.

New to the drive is the idea of only donating new books (as opposed to the "gently used" ones asked for in the past) which means I'll have to go outside my shelves to find a contribution. Got any suggestions? If you know of a book you think every child should have a chance to read, feel free tell us about it in the comments.
